Opening and Blessing of Our Lady of the Rosary Church Kenmore
On the 13th July 1969 the Parish Church at Kenmore was opened and Blessed by Bishop H. J. Kennedy D.D., Auxiliary Brisbane of Brisbane.
The church was commissioned in 1968 by Fr Tom Carroll along with the Presbytery (now the parish office) and the car park. These three projects came to $210,000. This loan was paid back over 20 years. The blessing and opening of the church was the culmination of a decade of community building and the community were rightly proud of the achievements.
After the opening of the school and temporary church in March 1963, then extensions, swimming pool, the parish hall and in 1969 this imposing church on the rise towards Moggill, it was a time for the Catholic Community to look back on a busy decade and look forward as the teachings of the second Vatican Council took hold in the Church.
Of course the new church was in line with the new liturgical norms of the new Mass. In many ways the design was imaginative and modern and since its construction has stood the test of time, even after the revision of the liturgical designs for churches.
I ask that if you have pictures of the Church or earlier, perhaps of the church being built, could you please either email them or bring them to the office so we can copy and scan them.
In many ways this is a back to Kenmore occasion for many former parish members and I invite current members to spread the word to those who you still have contact with that live outside the parish.
There will be more details in the coming month but at this time please put in your diaries 13 July 11am Mass and luncheon to follow.
